Real Life Issues with Buying Diamonds Online
17/09/2020
If you’ve stumbled onto my site by ‘googling’ for ways to buy diamonds online? then you are not alone. I’ve helped dozens of people from all over the World find Diamonds or just steering them in the right direction.
After a few incidents I thought I should tell my readers.
Example 1:
This is a true story, I personally had a client in my own Jewellery store who commissioned us to make an engagement ring for him. He was after a Natural Cushion Cut Diamond with a surrounding pav’e Halo and pav’e band. The Cushion needed to be between 5mm and 6mm as he didnt want the top Halo to be too big for his petite soon to be fiance.
We initially gave him a few Diamonds to look at online from our inventory and a few prices. The Client soon came back to us with quite a few diamonds that he’d seen online, alot from a well known US online Jewellery and Diamond e-commerce store. “Blue Nile”. They appeared cheap and he was confused. So I got stuck into looking over the what he was showing me.
I was looking at two diamonds that he was considering , both different sizes and prices when I had a déjà vu moment when flicking from one page to another. What the?, Both diamond images are were Identical. Our client had not noticed when I mentioned it to him, one Diamond is supposed to a 0.64ct and the other 0.90ct.
Many other diamonds on their website appear to show the actual diamond, but when we are presented with these two diamonds, which one is real or are neither of them? it does make you think twice, especially when we are trying to compare diamonds against diamonds not ‘apples for apples’. their Cut, Colour, Clarity and Carat weight are defining characteristics and their price is made up from these.
Both these Diamond images are shown below.

We found him a stunning 0.64ct E – VVS2 Cushion Halo Ring at the right price and made a life long friend. And she did say “YES”

Real Life Issues with Buying Diamonds Online
Example 1:
Roz from the UK got in touch by filling out out my ‘Find my Diamond’ form.
Roz is looking for a 075ct to 0.90ct Emerald Cut Diamond with a very high Colour D,E,F and a Clarity of FL,IF,VVS1 or VVS2. She also wants this diamond to be extremely well cut.
I personally agree with her goal, Emerald Cut Diamonds are step-cut and really need to a high Clarity and EXCELLENT in Cut. These cuts don’t have the facets that bling and dazzle like a Round Brilliant Cut for example. Minor Clarity defects can easily be hidden with Diamonds that have many facets.
Roz, was finding it extremely difficult to get clear answers let alone Photo’s and Video’s on potentional Diamonds. The best she often got was just a Standard GIA Report. A diamond report or Certificate is of course vital when buying Diamonds online, but standard GIA Report does’nt show any mapping of inclusions just the standard measurements, Colour, Cut, Clarity, Polish, Symmetry. It does not show any angles either.
Trying to get an ASET Tool image was like asking to have lunch with the Queen of England. Not going to happen..
My first choice for an Emerald Cut Diamond of this quality and open disclosure was Brian Gavin.com.
Brian has a Signature range of Emerald Cut Diamonds, and yes with all the Bells & Whistles with actual Images, Video, ASET Tool , IDEAL Scope, three different lighting conditions.
I did find a diamond for Roz in Brian Gavin, however Roz was adamant that she would buy in the UK only. As it is turning out, Roz is still having difficulties in getting any appropriate Videos, ASET or Ideal images. It’s not that difficult Great Britain E-Commerce Diamond Retailers, pick up your game.
People want Clarity and Disclosure to what they are buying. I personally think that buyers would pay a small fee to get access to these extremely important tools. Roz actually agreed..
Below is a quote from Roz;
“I’ve still not found a suitable diamond but seen some of interest with 77 Diamond and Taylor & Hart but no videos or images of them to help me make a decision so I’ve asked and awaiting responses.
You should definitely write something. From my experience so far, diamond dealers assume you know nothing so they feel they can sell you what they want. It’s peculiar why it’s so difficult to get visual information, it doesn’t promote trust or confidence therefore making the customer undervalued and likely to get ripped off.”
Well so far, Roz is still waiting but we are working on it together to try and get her the dream diamond she wants and deserves.
